Fraser Institute School Rankings: An Overview

While widely publicized, it is crucial to understand that these rankings focus almost exclusively on measurable academic outcomes (test scores). Critics often point out that the rankings do not account for other vital aspects of a quality education, such as: school environment, teaching quality, student demographics, arts programs, sports, extracurricular activities, student well-being, or support for special needs students. Therefore, the rankings are generally advised to be used as one piece of information, not the sole basis for judging a school.

**Newly built schools after year 2020 do not participate in the rankings. They don’t have enough students to participate the standard tests. Hence they do not typically appeared in this ranking. This does not mean that these schools academic results are not good.
**这几年市政府兴建了不少新学校。在 2020 年之后新建的学校通常不会出现在（Fraser Institute）排名中。这是因为这些学校还没有足够的学生来参加标准化考试。它们不参与该排名并不意味着这些学校的学术成绩不好。

Kanata
Kanata's schools consistently maintain a good standard due to the continuous influx of new residents, which includes both newly developed communities and the strong reputation of established areas. Property values here have also remained strong for many years. There are several newly built high schools in South Kanata that serve a large student population, but they are currently too new to participate in the rankings.

Kanata North
West Carleton has always been a solid public English high school. It covers Kanata North and rural areas like March and Dunrobin. Housing prices there are quite high, with plenty of luxury rural homes, so the quality of the student body has always been excellent.

Nepean
Rankings in Nepean and Barrhaven have dropped quite a bit, too. You have to be careful looking at Merivale Secondary, though, because it’s an IB school. Since the IB program recruits students from all over west Ottawa, the school’s overall ranking is boosted by those high-achieving students. If you look at the regular stream alone, the results might not be as strong. The teachers and curriculum are different, and the IB students and regular students rarely mix.
As for Barrhaven schools like St. Joseph, John McCrae, Mother Teresa, and Longfields Davidson Heights, their scores have likely dropped significantly due to a decline in the quality of the student intake over the last two years.
Nepean，Barrhaven 地区的排名也跌了不少。这里要注意一下因为Merivale Secondary是一个含有 IB 项目的学校。他们 IB 项目是面向全渥太华西部招生的。他的排名很大一部分是靠着 IB 的优质学生提上来的，如果是普通班的话可能成绩要打个折扣。 IB 班级的学习内容和老师都和普通班不一样，而且平常 IB 班和普通班的学生几乎没什么交集。Barrhaven 的中学St Joseph, John Mccrae, Mother Teresa, Longfields Davidson Heights很有可能是因为这两年生源质量下降了，所以成绩也跌的厉害。
Stittsville
The rankings for the two schools in Stittsville have remained stable in recent years. This community has also experienced rapid growth in the post-pandemic era. The population density here is not as high as in Barrhaven, yet numerous high-quality new developments from various builders are springing up. The overall quality of the community is highly assured

Ottawa East/Orleans
In the east end, particularly in the newer developments of Orleans, rankings for Mer Bleue and Garneau high schools have risen significantly. Residents in eastern Ottawa will observe that the academic performance of French-language schools in this area is noticeably superior to that of the English-language schools.

Ottawa
Colonel By has reclaimed the top spot in Ottawa high school rankings, a success that is inseparable from the long-standing reputation of its IB program. Top-tier central schools like Nepean and Lisgar are situated in affluent neighborhoods such as Westboro and The Glebe. Meanwhile, Canterbury High School, known for its arts program, has also maintained a stable ranking."
Colonel By 又回到了渥太华中学排名第一，和其老牌 IB 口碑是分不开的。市中心比较好的学校比如 Nepean，Lisgar都位于比较富裕的社区如Westboro, Glebe等。艺术类中学Cantebury的排名也比较稳定。
Summary
Based on these rankings, most Ottawa high schools have slipped a bit compared to the rest of the province. Locally, other than the IB leaders Colonel By and Merivale, we are still seeing good results from regular schools in Kanata North, the “Old Money” central neighborhoods, Stittsville, and Orleans.
Regrettably, schools in the south—specifically Barrhaven, Riverside South, and Manotick—saw quite a sharp decline.
